This is a bad time for two-door muscle cars, with shoppers worried about gas mileage and practicality. Ford revived the Mustang in 2005. Enthusiasts are aware that the next generation Mustang is due next year, so they could be holding out for the new model. Meantime, the latest additions to the Mustang line have been high-performance Shelby variants, such as last year's Shelby GT500KR, which looks great but doesn't account for much sales volume—and certainly doesn't improve gas mileage. Cutbacks in fleet sales also probably added to the drop in Mustang sales.
