Over 40% of the world’s population is affected by malaria. One child dies every 30 seconds from its effects. LINDA is a low-cost mosquito killer that attracts mosquitoes using carbon dioxide and the smell produced by bacteria that live on human feet. A two-tube system consists of a hopper feeding charcoal to be burned at the base and an outer tube carrying CO2 to the top of the device. A sock provides one potential way of collecting foot odor, while an electric fan keeps the charcoal alight and regulates the burning and production of CO2. The device will be used in conjunction with insecticide-treated bed nets and indoor mosquito repellents.
