In 1994 Mary Allen Lindemann and her husband returned to Portland, Me., and saw a vibrant arts community without a coffee shop where others saw a depressed district with a 40% vacancy rate. Since then, they have launched Coffee by Design. A key factor in the café's success has been its contribution to the local art scene. Offering an annual grant to a local artist has helped emphasize the store's Portland ties and created a brand recognized by the arts community.
