New-vehicle sales for the Dodge Durango fell by nearly 50% in the first half versus the year-ago period, and by more than two-thirds in June, according to AutoData. That's much worse than the mid-size SUV segment, which was down by 26.3% in the first half. For the 2006 Durango, Dodge added a feature to its optional Hemi V-8 that shuts off half the cylinders when cruising. That produces 20% better mileage, but even with the improvement, the V-8 only gets an EPA-estimated 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway. The base six-cylinder gets 16 mpg city/21 mpg highway.
