Outward Bound was conceived as a motivational training program for British seamen during World War II and grew into one of the largest outdoor education programs in the world. In the 1970s, the nonprofit began tailoring its wilderness courses to meet growing demand for corporate leadership training. For each company or team, Outward Bound sets up activities aimed at helping them develop specific skills they require in their business. Large organizations that have difficulty communicating with workers in the field, for example, can take part in a simulated search-and-rescue mission in a dense forest, where participants have to bark orders loud and clear.
