Heather Erickson started Twilight Nexus, one of the big early fan sites, in April 2006, when she was 21. The Denver-area native wanted to connect with other readers, debate what Bella and Edward should do, and share an obsession. "I had no other place to turn than the Internet," Erickson says. "I fell so hard for Edward and Bella's story that I was desperate to find other people who were as crazy about it as I was." The site initially ran a lot of quizzes and contests, including a pumpkin-carving contest where people would send in photos. And it had early ties to Meyer: Erickson's husband e-mailed the author in 2006, asking her to send a galley copy of New Moon before it came out. Meyer happily obliged.
