2008 Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius has the highest EPA-estimated combined fuel economy in the industry, at 46 mpg, according to fueleconomy.gov, a U.S. Energy Dept. Web site. The Prius uses an electric motor at start-up and at lower cruising speeds, and/or a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine when accelerating or at higher speeds, for a combined 110 horsepower. It can cover 493 miles on one tank, which holds 11.9 gallons of gas. Even then, fueleconomy.gov assumes you don't allow your tank to fall below 10% full. Running closer to empty, range exceeds 500 miles. There's a waiting list, so be prepared to pay full sticker. *All data courtesy of fueleconomy.gov. NOTE: Fuel cost estimates are based on 55% city driving, 45% highway driving; 15,000 annual miles; $3.93 per gallon for regular gas; $4.21 for premium; $4.71 for diesel; prices according to AAA national average for July 30, 2008; miles per tank assumes refilling at 10% capacity.
