It gets 30 mpg city/41 mpg highway, according to EPA estimates. That's with a six-speed manual transmission, but with a six-speed automatic, it still gets 40 mpg highway, according to the EPA. VW insists the Jetta TDI can do even better, at 38 mpg city/44 mpg highway for the manual. The new Jetta is VW's first diesel since the 2006 model year. Before this year, emissions rules kept diesels out of California, New York, and a few other states, but newer technology can meet the tougher standards.
