Filed Chapter 11 in 1990
Fallout: In 1989, business partners Stanley Tollman and Monty Hundley bought the Days Inn chain for $765 million, taking on heavy debt in the process. They filed bankruptcy and sold the chain the next year, but years later the pair was charged with defrauding their creditors and hiding assets in a scheme to avoid paying the debt. Wyndham Worldwide (WYN) bought Days Inn in 1992, and the company now operates nearly 1,900 franchises. Hundley was convicted in 2004, while Tollman remains a fugitive in Britain.
