Fallout: A $54 million settlement in a class action alleging racism at Denny's (DENN) helped push the company into bankruptcy in 1997. In response, the restaurant chain launched an aggressive diversity campaign, including expanding minority-owned franchises. In 2006 Denny's was named one of the best companies for diversity by Black Enterprise. The company now operates more than 1,500 restaurants, three-fourths of which are franchised.
