Before the 2001-2002 season, Mourning was diagnosed with kidney disease. He retired in 2003 because of the worsening condition. After successful surgery, he returned to the New Jersey Nets and would eventually win his first NBA title with the Miami Heat in 2006. Mourning has not decided whether he will attempt another comeback.
