Right90

A 30-person, $10 million software company in Foster City, Calif.

The Challenge: Integrating new staff at a fast-growing company.

The Answer: Small, routine social events suggested by employees and supported by Right90.

How It Works: The company, whose software helps companies forecast and manage sales, asks employees to come up with workday events that don’t take too long or cost too much. Past events include team kite-making and flying and a guess-the-wine tasting. An April event featured original cocktails with work-related themes, such as the cantaloupe-flavored Forecast Surprise.

Cost: Up to $100 per event.

Why It Works: Events evolve as the employee base changes. The kite-flying was in July 2006, when most staff were engineers. As more sales and marketing people come on board, events focus more on mingling. Says founder Kim Orumchian: “In order to be a team, we have to spend the time together.”
