Last year, Ubong Attah was running a profitable Web design firm called Studio10Fourteen and had recently sold an online jewelry shop for around $55,000. After being diagnosed with systemic lupus, Attah launched home-based Prolete Medical Billing, which handles electronic Medicare claims submissions for health agencies in the Dallas area. She expected revenues of around $4 million in 2008.

Attah says she she stopped running Prolete and kicked off another venture called Pocket Pair Entertainment, a company that runs casino-themed parties for up to 1,000 guests. Attah expects Pocket Pair Entertainment to be in the black by the end of 2008 or early 2009. Studio10Fourteen, meanwhile, continues to be profitable. It generated $42,000 in 2007 revenue—and Attah expects $175,000 in 2009.
