A Better Night's Sleep

Amit Nar, 23
Easton, Pa.

Then:
Amit Nar wanted to help customers get a better night's sleep. When he graduated from Babson College in May 2007, he returned to his hometown of Easton, Pa., where his father is a sleep physician, and opened a center to test and treat sleep disorders such as apnea, insomnia, and narcolepsy. His hotel-like facility opened in October 2007, with four rooms equipped with queen-size Tempurpedic beds. He expects revenues of around $500,000 in 2008. Nar said his biggest business challenge had been finding qualified technicians who can monitor and diagnose patients.

Now:
He's pleased to say he's still on track to pull in $500,000 in 2008, and also reports that his business, which now employs two people full time, became profitable in Feb. What is different from the business plan he sketched out last year is his marketing strategy. Instead of pitching his service to referring physicians, he's focusing directly on potential patients, offering hotel-like rooms with flat screen TVs, king-size beds, and other creature comforts. He's also been fine-tuning a Web site, which he says should launch by 2009.
