Consumer spending has held up surprisingly well in the U.S., with retail sales growing at an annual rate of 2% or more over the last year. But sales of higher-priced oil products have accounted for a big share of the increase, while housing-related businesses have suffered. Nationally, retail jobs have begun to decline.
