New York

Neighborhood: Bushwick, Brooklyn

This Brooklyn neighborhood, home to a growing number of art galleries and young hipsters priced out of neighboring Williamsburg, is about 40 minutes by subway from midtown Manhattan. Crime is on the decline in this community that reminds longtime New Yorkers of the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the 1980s when it was home to artists, immigrants, and drug dealers. Large one-bedroom apartments are available in Bushwick for less than $300,000. (For all neighborhoods in this slide show, it is easy to find homes priced under $300,000.)
