Citi (C) agreed on Sept. 29 to acquire Wachovia's banking operations for $2.16 billion in a deal brokered by regulators that will give it a total of 7,600 branches globally. Citi will take up to $42 billion in losses from Wachovia's mortgage portfolio, with the FDIC acting as a backstop against further losses in exchange for an equity stake. Citi and Wachovia combined have suffered more than $113 billion in mortgage-related losses.
