The company started out as a blacksmith and developed into an ironworks producer, making specialty grates, railings, stairways, vaults, and ornamental and structural ironwork before specializing in industrial doors. Cornell's work can be found on the circular stairs and ironwork on the Brooklyn Bridge as well as the iron base and stairways of the Statue of Liberty.
