From Mill Workers to House Painters

During the Depression, few were buying paper, and Crane's mills ground to a halt, leaving the company's many employees without work. Rather than let them go, the family decided to create work. At the time, Dalton, Mass., was a company town and Crane owned many of the houses that its employees rented. Instead of laying them off, Crane sent its mill workers to paint over 150 houses.
