Those old enough to remember being driven around Manhattan in a Checker cab can’t help but harbor a fondness for these large, comfortable cabs. Unfortunately, the company, which had started as a taxi business, was hit by an anti-trust suit brought by the state of New York in 1964, which maintained it was self-dealing because it operated a livery service and made its own cars. Generations of New Yorkers and visitors have suffered ever since.
