The Duesenberg was the sine qua non of American luxury automobiles from the beginning, which explains why the marque probably never stood a chance. They were too big, too beautiful, too fast, too hard to make, and, most important, too expensive. No two Duesenbergs were made alike. Movie stars and kings drove them. Like Cord and Auburn, which were also both owned by E.L. Cord, they were doomed by the Great Depression and their own ostentatiousness.
