Back in the early days of the automotive industry the Hudson Motor Car Co. was one of several carmakers that made a serious attempt to become a major player in the nascent automotive industry. Essex, one of its first brands, was designed to compete with Ford and Chevrolet, while Hudson targeted wealthier clients. The Essex was the first affordable car to offer enclosed cabs (before then most car interiors were exposed to the elements). During the Great Depression it was phased out. (Hudson, along with several other companies, eventually became what was the American Motors Corp.)
