Sponsor: U.S. Defense Dept.

The objective was to reduce the weight of the gear soldiers must carry into the field from 9 kilos (almost 20 lb.) to less than 4 kilos (8.8 lb.). Specifically, the Pentagon sought a lightweight power source. A combined entry by DuPont and Germany's Smart Fuel Cell was awarded the prize on Oct. 6, 2008.
