Eli Broad

The founder of Kaufman & Broad (now KB Home) and SunAmerica, established the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation in 1999 as a vehicle to help contribute to major civic projects in Los Angeles, and advance and develop public education and appreciation of contemporary art, science, and medical research.

"I applied the same entrepreneurial philosophy when I ran two Fortune 500 companies as I do today at our $2.5 billion foundation. I ask similar questions in both activities: Can we create something new or improve something that already exists? Can we improve the quality of life for the broadest public? In business, this meant creating affordable home ownership and retirement savings products. In philanthropy, this means dramatically improving public education so children receive an education that prepares them for success in college, careers, and life, or improving the human condition through advances in genomics and stem cell research, or making contemporary art accessible to the broadest public."
