Proving that not everything Google (GOOG) touches turns to gold, interest in the company's high-profile launch of a virtual world, Lively, quickly waned. "It changes everything," Computerworld gushed shortly after the avatar-based chat space launched in July. Only it didn't actually change much at all. The would-be competitor to Linden Labs' Second Life never really took off, and in the middle of November, Google announced that it would shut down the service by the end of the year. "We want to ensure that we prioritize our resources and focus more on our core search, ads, and apps business," Google announced drily.
