The city, one of South Florida's oldest communities, is an hour north of West Palm Beach and two hours south of Orlando. The downtown has gone through a bit of a renaissance in recent years after many decades of neglect. The downtown Sunrise Theater was built in 1923 and closed in 1983 before reopening in 2006 as a 1,200-seat performing arts center.
