The county includes parts of the Navajo, Hopi, and Apache reservations. Its primary industries are coal mining, timber, manufacturing, and tourism. More than half of the 9,959-square-mile county is made up of Indian reservations. About 30% is owned by corporations and individuals, while the federal and state government control 15%.
