Chen was the first leader of the Democratic Progressive Party to become Taiwan’s President. He left office in 2008 after serving two terms and was replaced by the leader of the opposition, Ma Ying-jeou. Chen’s son-in-law Chao Chien-ming was arrested in 2006 and later convicted of insider trading. Chen himself is now in prison fighting corruption charges he and his supporters say are politically motivated.
