In late December 2008, Tian pleaded guilty to charges that Sanlu produced and sold substandard milk products containing the chemical additive melamine. Sanlu and other Chinese dairy companies sold tainted milk products that caused at least four infant deaths and kidney disease for hundreds of thousands of others.
