In February 1989, a month after the Iranian government issued a death sentence on author Salman Rushdie following the publication of his novel The Satanic Verses, a pipe bomb was thrown through the front window of Cody's. While large booksellers across the country pulled the book from its shelves, Cody's continued to carry the controversial novel.
