Data breaches cost companies an average of $300,000 in losses a year, according to the Computer Security Institute. So if you’ve got employees working remotely, make sure they use a virtual private network (VPN) and a strong password when connecting to your network. For encryption software, consider PGP Corp.,which has a wide range of offerings, or TrueCrypt, which is free, open-source, and can protect individual drives on a computer. Train your employees not to open suspicious files or fall prey to “social engineering” hackers, who pretend to be IT personnel (usually over the phone) to gain unauthorized access, says Kevin Mitnick, a well-known hacker turned consultant in Henderson, Nev.
