Having watched 401(k) account values plunge, investors may wonder how their defined contribution plans measure up against others. We asked BrightScope—a new online database that has analyzed more than 1,000 plans, based on information from companies and filings from the U.S. Labor Dept. and Securities & Exchange Commission—to sift through plans with at least $100 million in assets. We then culled national data to let you compare your 401(k) with standouts at the top and bottom in key categories.

Data: BrightScope; EBRI/ICI database (average 401(k) balance); Federal Reserve’s 2007 Survey of Consumer Finances (average participation rate); Morningstar (fund return data).

Note: Company data from BrightScope was culled from the 548 plans with more than $100 million in assets in its database. Data is most recent available.
