Population: 20 million
Internet users: 2.1 million
There are now 40 times as many Internet users in Syria as there were in 2004, and Internet cafes are sprouting up in poor regions around the country. The increased use has spurred the Syrian government to block more than 160 sites critical of the government, intercept e-mails of users it views as "dissidents," and frequently interrogate citizens about their online activities. Facebook, Google (GOOG)-owned YouTube, and Amazon (AMZN) are blocked in the country—the official reason is for fear of espionage by Israeli secret agents.
