Where the Tech Jobs Are

The rough economy is vaporizing jobs across the U.S. But technology jobs creation is holding its own, according to a Mar. 31 report from TechAmerica, a trade group representing the U.S. technology industry.

The survey, based on U.S. employment in 2007, the last year for which complete data are available, looked at job growth and decline on a state-by-state basis across computer manufacturing, systems design, telecommuncations, software publishing, and other segments of the tech sector. The study shows pockets of growth in states including Texas, Georgia, Kansas, and Washington.

Some results are surprising. California, home to tech hotbed Silicon Valley, retained its usual No. 1 slot in overall number technology jobs. Yet the employment pool there didn't grow in 2007. Meanwhile Kansas, home to Sprint () and GPS maker Garmin (), led the nation in percentage tech job growth. Texas added 14,700 positions, tops in absolute terms.

The bad news: Tech manufacturing jobs nationwide have been hit hard: 23,100 have disappeared since 2007, more than 10,000 in the semiconductor industry alone.
