Twitter is frequently used as a tool to organize "tweetups," social or professional gatherings that bring together anywhere from a handful of people to hordes. On Feb. 12, more than 100 cities around the world participated in the first annual Twestival—Twitter-organized events with music and activities that raised $250,000 for developing-nation nonprofit charity:water (www.charitywater.org). Next year, organizer Amanda Rose expects as many as 500 cities to participate and raise even more money for a yet-to-be-named charity. She says she's regularly approached by businesses interest in getting on board for the next one.
