Another potential way to measure the movement of humanity populations is to use cell phones equipped with chips that are connected to the global positioning system of satellites. The digital bread-crumb trail could give epidemiologists insight into who may have had contact with an infected person, says Sandy Pentland, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Pentland calls the practice "reality mining" and envisions using it in the near future to combat the spread of illness.
