Celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, the venerable Ghan traverses Australia from north to south, taking two days and nights on the journey from Darwin to Adelaide via Alice Springs. Since last year it has offered an ultraluxurious Platinum service, featuring oversize sleeping compartments paneled in Tasmanian myrtle, with binoculars available to watch the Outback scenery and wildlife. Meals, including fine Australian wines, are served in the Queen Adelaide restaurant car. The Platinum fare, including meals, is $2,276 per person.
