To end the Boeing 747's monopoly in the extra-large-aircraft category, Airbus decided in 2000 to build an even bigger plane, the A380. The double-decker, which entered service with Singapore Airlines in 2007 after a two-year production delay, can carry as many as 800 passengers. But most carriers are opting for fewer than 500 seats, leaving room for luxurious, private, first-class suites and other amenities.
