Stewart, a onetime stockbroker and housewife, started a catering business in 1976, followed shortly by the release of her first book, Entertaining, which became the second-best-selling cookbook in history. She soon added more books and moved into television and magazine publishing. In 1997 she founded Martha Stewart Omnimedia (MSO), which went public two years later.
