At the age of 92, Robert Byrd is the longest-serving senator in U.S. history and was elected to an unprecedented ninth term in 2006. The West Virginia Democrat has twice served as majority leader and is President Pro Tempore of the Senate, which puts him third in line in Presidential succession after Vice-President Joseph Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
