The Georgia Institute of Technology was founded in 1885 and opened three years later, awarding only a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. The school has come a long way since opening its doors to 84 students in 1888. Women were first admitted in 1952. In 1961, Georgia Tech began admitting African-American students, becoming the first university in the Deep South to do so without a court order. Today, more than 19,000 undergraduate and graduate students attend the school's colleges of architecture, engineering, sciences, computing, management, and liberal arts.
The College of Management serves both graduates and undergraduates and offers full-time and evening MBA programs, along with PhD and nondegree executive education programs. In 2003, the College moved into its new home in Technology Square—the culmination of the Midtown Atlanta Fifth Street Project announced in 2000. The school prides itself on the opportunities the city offers. In a BusinessWeek survey, students back up the claim—one recent graduate writes, "Atlanta is a great location. It is the business hub of the South."
