No fatal accidents
Years produced: 1993 to present
Number in service: 341
The A340 has flown more than 13 million hours without a fatal accident. Despite that enviable record, few airlines now are ordering the plane because it has four engines, which makes it less fuel-efficient than twin-engine long-haul jets such as the Boeing 777 and Airbus 330. In August 2005, an Air France A340 overshot the runway while landing in Toronto during a thunderstorm, destroying the plane and causing 43 injuries, but no fatalities.
