The venerable DC-9 has been part of the Boeing family since that company's 1997 merger with McDonnell Douglas. It is still flown by Delta Airlines, which acquired a sizable DC-9 fleet from Northwest Airlines in their recent merger, as well as many smaller carriers worldwide. In April 2008, the crash of a DC-9 operated by Hewa Bora Airways in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was reported to have killed at least 44 people.
