The MD-80, designed as a replacement for the DC-9, is still flown by American and Delta Air Lines, and by several European carriers including Alitalia and SAS. The most recent fatal U.S. accident was in January 2000, when an Alaska Airlines MD-80 crashed in the Pacific. In August 2008, 153 people died when a flight operated by Spanish carrier Spanair crashed enroute from Madrid to the Canary Islands.
