Student designers wowed the IDEA judges with their experimental inventiveness. Five products were given the competition's top gold award, including a whimsical yet thought-provoking idea for recycling batteries. Energy Seed harnesses the batteries' leftover power to illuminate an attached LED street lamp. It was, said judge and LEGO creative director, Rosario Costa, "a beautiful idea, which really opens the public's eyes to the pollution discarded batteries can cause if they're not fully recycled."
