Can the European Tech Giant Beat Apple?

Competition is heating up between Apple and Nokia—the world's largest cell-phone maker. On Aug. 24, the Finnish company unveiled its first netbook, called the Booklet 3G. A day later, the phone manufacturer launched a cut-price smartphone, dubbed the Nokia 5230, targeted at music-savvy consumers looking for an iPhone alternative. The moves couldn't come soon enough. Nokia had been hemorrhaging market share in the lucrative smartphone market to Apple's iPhone and other rivals. And the company's decision to invest in netbooks is widely viewed as a pre-emptive step amid rumors that its American rival will soon unveil a tablet netbook.
