Howard Deskin, 50, managed business systems at Wachovia Securities. After Wachovia took over AG Edwards in 2007 year, Deskin was told he'd have to relocate to St. Louis. He didn’t want to leave Virginia, so he took a buyout and started a WSI Franchise, which provides Internet services to businesses. "I had a really good run at Wachovia," Deskin says. "But having your own business where you get to meet hundreds of people and learning a new field—that's better."
