Saginaw area, north of Flint and south of Bay City, is home to several colleges, including Delta College, Saginaw Valley State University, and Davenport University. It has been hit hard by the recession but is in better shape than nearby Flint. The Saginaw area is home to the 101-year-old Saginaw Country Club, which has tennis courts, a swimming pool, and an 18-hole golf course. The town's name is familiar to anybody who knows the lyrics to the Simon & Garfunkel song, America ("It took me four days to hitchhike to Saginaw").
