Trident is America's original sugar-free gum. Introduced in 1962, it was sweetened with saccharin. It now uses xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Early formulations also included three enzymes thought to combat tartar buildup. Trident, a weapon with three prongs, was picked as a logical name.
