The Houston metro, one of the nation's most robust economies, is home to the U.S. headquarters of Shell Oil, BP, and ConocoPhillips. Employment here peaked in the third quarter of last year. Gross metropolitan product in the second quarter was down just 2% from the peak in the third quarter of last year. Home prices grew 4.9% in the second quarter compared with the same period a year earlier. And the unemployment rate in June was 8%, up 3 points from a year earlier.
